How to budget when you're paid every two weeks
Biweekly pay is 26 paychecks a year, not 24. That one fact explains why some months feel tight and two months feel rich. Here is a calm way to plan it.
The biweekly budget, in 4 steps
- Find your weekly number. One paycheck x 26 ÷ 52 = what you really earn per week. Every-2-weeks pay is not the same as twice a month.
- Match bills to paychecks. Write each monthly bill with its due day. Each one is paid from the paycheck that lands before it.
- Save from every check. Even $5 a week adds up to $260 a year. Move it on payday so it doesn't feel like spending money.
- Plan your two 3-paycheck months. Most years have 26 paydays, so two months get an extra check. Decide now where it goes.

- Check 1 (1st): rent, phone, $50 to savings → rest to spend
- Check 2 (15th): car, utilities, subscriptions, $50 to savings → rest to spend
- Check 3 (twice a year): sinking funds or an extra savings goal

Questions
How do I budget if I get paid every two weeks?
List your monthly bills with due dates, match each bill to the paycheck that lands before it, set aside savings from each check, and spend what is left over the two weeks. A weekly number (paycheck x 26 / 52) makes it simpler.
How many 3-paycheck months are there?
With 26 biweekly paydays in most years, two months get a third paycheck. Which months depends on your first payday of the year.
What should I do with a third paycheck?
Bills are already covered by the other two, so many people send it to savings, a sinking fund or debt. It is your call; this is not financial advice.
Is there a free biweekly budget calculator?
